Help with Search
Simple Search
There are two general search options on Tyler Web Sites.
The simple search, available on the home page and several other pages
allows you to search the listed web sites for the word(s) you type into
the search box.
The simple search is an "all" search, which means
the sites will match if they match all the words for which
you are searching. Results are returned according to relevance to the search words, that is, the
more times the site matches a word, the higher the relevance.
Sites are matched based on the site name, URL (web site
address) and site description. If you want a more specific search, leave
out common words or try the Advanced Search.
The search results
Results are displayed with 10 sites per page,
with the name of the site, and a
next
to it. Click on the
to
see the details from the database in a separate window. Select the
name, and the site will open in a new window.
If there is more than one page, page and navigation options
will be displayed below the list.
Advanced Search
Search Types
The advanced search allows you to specify the search parameters.
In Search for Any Word, you can search for sites with any of the words in
the search box.
In Search for Partial Words, you can search for "any"
or "all" partial words in the search box.
Fields
In addition to specifying the search type, you can also
specify the fields you want to search.
Name
URL
Description
Note: When search for "all" words, you may want
to only search through one field at a time. Otherwise, the search
will attempt to match all words for all fields.
Results per page
Advanced also allows you choose whether to view 10, 20
or 50 results per page.
Details
When you select display details, the sites will be listed
with Name, URL, Description and the when the site's entry was added or
changed in the database.
Categories and Designers
Two other options allow you to display a simple list
of sites in a particular category, or designed by a particular web site
company. the selected is made from drop down lists. Check the appropriate
box to see details for each.
Power Search
The search for power users simply uses the raw options of the database. Searches without modifiers will simply search for any word in the search box. The following modifiers will enhance the search.
Adding ' + ' before any search word, will require that the site search contain that word.
Adding ' - ' before any search word, will exclude site search results that contain that word.
Adding a ' ~ ' before any search word will rate those site searches lower in the search result.
Adding a ' * ' following a search word will search for any site that begins with that word.
Enclosing multiple words in double quotations will search for the phrase. In order to make the search exclusive, you still need to include the '+' before the phrase.
Site
Search
A
site search is different in that you are searching the text of TylerWebSites.com
for a word or phrase. As work is still being done on the site search it
is only available from this link.
This search is handy if you want to search for an article you've read
in the past, or something in the articles on a particular subject.
